Early SLCN Identification

The Early Years Language & Communication Screener (MELCS) is a digital, evidence-based tool designed to identify Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) in children aged 4–5. It enables early, accurate screening to support intervention planning and improve outcomes for children at risk of Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), social communication difficulties.

Get in touch
Do you offer in-person sessions?

Both assessments and treatment are fully online using our gamified platform. We’ve found this to be effective, scalable, and accessible for families and schools. In most cases, children can be seen at home or in school depending on preference and contract type.

What types of speech, language, and communication needs do you support?

We cover a broad spectrum, including:

  • Developmental Language Disorder (DLD)

  • Speech sound disorders

  • Social communication and Autism

  • SEMH

  • Hearing impairment

  • Down Syndrome

  • Cleft lip/palate

We do not currently support:

  • Dysphagia

  • Voice disorders

  • High-tech AAC (e.g. Eyegaze) – unless pre-approved
Can we request a one-off assessment only?

Yes. We offer assessment-only services, including case history review, 50-minute assessment, and a comprehensive report.

Can the reports be used as EHCP evidence?

Yes, the ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ Speech and Language screener investigates all areas of speech and language development. Specialist subsets can be administered for children and young people with specific needs and the results of these can be reported for use in EHCP assessment.

How many sessions are needed?

Following an assessment, we will send you a draft provision map with an estimate of sessions required in order to meet initial targets. However, until we know more about your student’ difficulties;  their learning style and their speed of progression it is difficult to say how many sessions they will require in order to reach their full potential. Good communication between parents, school and other practitioners as well as regular assessment will allow your therapist to give you a good idea of prognosis.

What qualifications and experience do the therapists have?

All our therapists are registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT). We only hire therapists of NHS Band 6 and above, so they have all had several years of experience before starting to work with ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ.

How can we track progress?

At ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ Therapy, we understand how important it is for Local Authorities to have clear, measurable ways to track the progress of children with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN)—not only for individual case management but also to evaluate the impact of wider early intervention strategies.

That’s why we’ve built comprehensive dashboards and data reporting tools into our platform to support both child-level tracking and service-wide oversight.

This data can feed directly into LA-level reports on service efficacy, allowing you to demonstrate value, support commissioning decisions, and meet accountability requirements.

We can provide monthly metrics which allows you to track key details such as
  • Who is currently accessing SALT sessions
  • How many hours have been delivered in the previous month
  • How many hours have been delivered in total over the academic year
  • Number of missed hours

In short, ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ gives LAs a powerful set of tools to monitor outcomes, improve service planning, and demonstrate the real-world impact of early identification and intervention for SLCN.
