Dr. Kehinde Moses Ige is a political scientist with a doctorate in Politics and International Affairs and a Master of Arts in Political Science and Government from Northern Arizona University.

He also holds a Master of Science from East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania in Public Administration with a minor in management and leadership as well as Bachelor of Science in International Relations from Caleb University.

His research interests span public administration, public policy, political thought and theory, the dynamics of bureaucratic quality and Anti-semitic Studies .

Dr. Ige brings more than a decade of faculty and administrative experience across Africa and North America.

He currently serves as the Associate Director for Student Engagement- (BSE), at the Angelina Pedroso Center for Diversity & Intercultural Affairs here at ��ɫ��Ƶ, where he works to support and advance meaningful engagement, belonging, and student success.

��ɫ��Ƶ’s credit outlook was revised from “stable” to “positive” by S&P Global Ratings. The University’s investment grade remained stable at “BBB-,” which it has held since 2024.

The outlook revision, announced Aug. 14, highlights Northeastern’s ongoing financial progress and the promising outlook for future improvements. In its assessment, S&P cited two years of solid enrollment growth, which is expected to continue, balance sheet growth and improvement in state funding as key factors supporting the improved outlook.

"This positive outlook is an important affirmation of the progress ��ɫ��Ƶ has made," said President Katrina E. Bell-Jordan. "We have worked deliberately to strengthen our financial position while maintaining our commitment to providing students with a high-quality, affordable education. I am grateful to our faculty, staff, stewards and supporters whose collective efforts are helping to create a stronger and more sustainable future for ��ɫ��Ƶ."

The positive outlook underscores the University's dedication to stabilizing enrollment, responsibly managing resources and investing in student success, all of which reassure stakeholders of the University's long-term stability.

"��ɫ��Ƶ's continued financial and enrollment progress could position the University for a future rating upgrade," said Vice President for Finance and Administration Beni Ortiz, CPA. "This would provide the University with greater financial flexibility and the potential to access capital on more favorable terms."

The S&P action follows Moody's Ratings January 2026 upgrade of Northeastern's issuer rating to "Baa3," restoring the University to investment-grade status. Together, the independent assessments affirm the University’s improving financial position and institutional stability.

"This recognition shows that our strategy is producing meaningful results," said President Bell-Jordan. "We will continue building on this momentum through responsible stewardship, sustained enrollment growth and investments that support student success and the long-term vitality of ��ɫ��Ƶ."

��ɫ��Ƶ is excited to host Latine Heritage Month festivities throughout September and October. Events will be held on the Main Campus, 5500 N. St. Louis Ave., and at El Centro, 3390 N. Avondale Ave., in Chicago.

The University is the longest-standing four-year public Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) in the Midwest. As such, activities will also take place specifically for students and employees during National HSIs Week, which runs from Sept. 14-20, 2026.

“As I celebrate my first Latine Heritage Month at ��ɫ��Ƶ, I’m especially excited to see our community come together around this year’s theme, “Soaring in Cultura: ��ɫ��Ƶ Together,” said Executive Director of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Eric J. Pegués, Ed.D. “Through the work of the Angelina Pedroso Center for Diversity and Intercultural Affairs, we have an important opportunity not only to celebrate the histories, cultures, voices and contributions of Latine communities, but also to foster connection, learning and belonging throughout our University.”

The United States recognizes Latine Heritage Month (also known as Hispanic Heritage Month) from Sept. 15-Oct. 15 because of the number of significant anniversaries for many Latin American countries that fall within that time. Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua all commemorate their anniversaries of independence on Sept. 15. Mexico recognizes its independence day on Sept. 16. Chile’s independence day is Sept. 18. Additionally, Día de la Raza (“Day of the People/Race”) — which honors and commemorates countries and people that were conquered by Spain and other European countries — is observed by many Spanish-speaking countries on Oct. 12 as an alternative to Columbus Day.

“Celebrating Latine Heritage Month at ��ɫ��Ƶ is important because it gives our students, staff, faculty, families and community an opportunity to see their cultures, histories, identities and experiences reflected and valued across the University,” said Pedroso Center Associate Director of Latinx Student Engagement Danny Cortez. “It is also a chance for us to build connection, strengthen belonging and celebrate the incredible diversity that exists within our Latine communities.”

The Pedroso Center and Northeastern’s El Centro location have coordinated a number of free events for the University and general public to celebrate the Latine Heritage Month, including:

The Department of Music and Dance will present a free Latine Heritage Month vocal performance on Oct. 7 at 7:30 p.m. on the Main Campus in the Recital Hall.

The inaugural 2026-2027 Assessment Summit Series will be a year-long series of four working sessions to help programs build and refine their assessment plans. Find community with folks from other programs to learn new ideas on measuring student learning that can be applied to their program. Each summit pairs short pre-work with a live session, so come having watched the assigned videos and finished the prep for your program.

We invite any faculty interested in assessment, assessment coordinators, program coordinators and department chairpersons to an assessment social hour on Tuesday, September 15, 2026 in Library 310 (CTL Professional Development room) from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Light snacks will be provided.

On Sept. 22-23, 1981, the Commission on the Wartime Relocation and Internment of Civilians (CWRIC) hearings were held on ��ɫ��Ƶ’s Main Campus. The hearings investigated the legality of Executive Order 9066, a mandate issued by President Franklin D. Roosevelt during World War II that led to the detainment of more than 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry, two-thirds of whom were American citizens. Considered a threat to national security because of their ethnic background, the uprooted Japanese and Japanese Americans were placed into internment camps and held for an average of three years. No internee was ever formally charged with or convicted of espionage or sabotage.

To mark the 45th anniversary of the CWRIC hearings, the University will host "Reckoning with Redress: A Three Part Series,” which will reflect on this often forgotten part of American history. All events will be free, open to the public and will take place on the University’s Main Campus, 5500 N. St. Louis Ave. in Chicago. Events include an art and archival exhibition about the Japanese American Redress Movement; the community celebration and project premiere of Full Spectrum Education’s “Reckoning with Redress,” a cinematic digital history project; and the University’s annual Jean Burke Carlson and Diane Berger Ehrlich Memorial Lecture.

Michael Tanimura and Professor Emerita Alice Murata are the co-curators of “Reckoning with Redress: 45th Anniversary Exhibit,” which will run from Sept. 5 - Oct. 31 in the Ronald Williams Library. Murata is the author of the book “Japanese Americans in Chicago” (Arcadia Publishing) and is involved in all three parts of the “Reckoning with Redress” series. In 2021, 40 years after the CWRIC hearings took place, Murata spearheaded the University’s Japanese American Redress conference titled, “With Liberty and Justice for All: Racism, Redress and Reparations,” which brought together artists, activists and scholars from across the country, examining the significance and influence of the CWRIC hearings as well as how racism continues to impact non-white Americans.

Murata has a very personal connection to the Japanese American Redress Movement. She and her family were forced to live at Poston Internment Camp in Arizona when she was a very young child.

“It was a great injustice for Japanese Americans to be placed in camps during World War II because of racism and the fact that the majority were American citizens whose basic rights were denied,” Murata said. “This exhibit shares art and artifacts which helps people learn how Japanese Americans made Redress successful.”

The University has a long history with the Japanese American Redress Movement. It is home to the Japanese American Redress Collection, which features the transcripts of the CWRIC hearings held in 1981. The University’s Digital Commons also holds the “Hearing Before the Commission on Wartime Relocation and Internment of Civilians” collection, which features the video footage of the CWRIC hearings. Part of the films became part of “Asian Americans,” a five-part PBS documentary series.

“The Japanese American archive is one of the ��ɫ��Ƶ Libraries collections that we are most proud of because it strikes such a chord with the Chicago community,” said Dean of ��ɫ��Ƶ Libraries Steven Harris. “The collection has stimulated many programs, discussions and inquiries, inspiring questions that resonate with today’s social and political issues. The role our University Archivists have played is a point of pride as well. The work they did to organize and digitize parts of the collection has given them greater visibility and showcased their dedication to preserving historical documents.”

Full Spectrum Education, a division of Full Spectrum Features, will host the public launch of their “Reckoning with Redress” digital history project on Sept. 22 in Alumni Hall, located within the Student Union. Guests will move through an interactive showcase of the project — including their “Activating the Archives” game and digital story map — before gathering for screenings of “Enough,” a short docudrama filmed at ��ɫ��Ƶ in 2025 that recreated the 1981 hearings, and “Reckonings,” a short documentary on the history of the Redress Movement and the making of the project.

“On Sept. 22, we're not just marking an anniversary — we're bringing this community back to the very room where their voices were first heard,” said Full Spectrum Features’ Director of Education and Research Ashley Cheyemi McNeil, Ph.D. “Forty-five years ago, survivors and descendants stood up at ��ɫ��Ƶ and insisted that their stories become part of the public record. Launching ‘Reckoning with Redress’ on that same campus, on that same date, is our way of saying: We heard you then, and we're making sure the next generation hears you now."

Lastly, the University’s annual Jean Burke Carlson and Diane Berger Ehrlich Memorial Lecture will be held on Oct. 15 in Alumni Hall and in the Sasha Gerritson Theatre (formerly the ��ɫ��Ƶ Auditorium in Building E). Associate Professor of History at the University of Illinois Chicago Michael Jin, Ph.D., will discuss the Japanese American Redress Movement and present “Reckoning with Redress: What Teachers Need to Know.”

Dean of the Daniel L. Goodwin College of Education Thomas Philion, Ph.D., said it feels fitting for the annual Carlson and Ehrlich Lecture to focus on the Japanese American Redress Movement because of the 45th anniversary of the hearings being held at the University and the history that can be explored with educators and students.

“The idea that history should be touched and felt, not just recorded, is central to teacher education at ��ɫ��Ƶ,” Dr. Philion said. “By bringing Dr. Jin's expertise in Asian American history and its teaching to our future educators, we're equipping them with both the content knowledge and the pedagogical tools to help their own students understand how movements for social justice take shape, one community at a time.”

Murata feels that it is important for more attention to be brought to this part of American history that is often overlooked because much of what happened in the past is continuing today.

“We need to learn from past experiences,” Murata said. “Everyone deserves justice and equal treatment. Yet still today racism exists and in fear basic rights are denied. Fairer immigration laws need to be enacted. We must continue to keep working for peace and justice for everyone.”
